How can I gain experience as a pop star?

Many pop stars seem to jump onto the public arena from nowhere. However, almost always, they have built up a string of successes at various levels and gained a lot of valuable experience so that they are ready for prime time. Much of this experience is unpaid, so if you would like to be a pop star, consider starting now and gaining as much experience as you possibly can.

Here are some suggestions for ways to gain experience as a pop star:

  • Offer to perform at school concerts
  • Make friends with people who have their own recording equipment
  • Join a band as a singer
  • Record your own songs at home on your computer
  • Offer to sing and perform for families and friends, including weddings, birthdays and special events.

How do I join a band?

Forming a band and making money, is like forming a business. You will need to create great music but you will also need to know how to get gigs, or paid concerts, and record and distribute albums. While this is possible, the reality of making money from music is very hard work. Some bands have managers and agents who take care of the business side of things, but before this can happen the band needs to be very good at what they do.

You can be a singer in a band, and all you need is some musicians who you get along with and can make great music with. You may know these people already. They might be your friends or family members. If you don’t know anyone who would be suitable to form a band with, you could advertise for members or apply to advertisements that others have placed. You will need to meet these people and have an audition to demonstrate your talents and your suitability for the band.

Should I do a course to be a pop star?

To maximise your chances of making it big, you will need to learn the skills of a singer. This may take many years and receiving professional tuition through a course or professional tutor or performance coach could fast track the process and provide you with the skills and experience you need to succeed.

There are many colleges who can teach you how to sing. Some focus on developing singing skills as a hobby or an interest, not for making money. Others are dedicated to pop stars and bands and have and understanding of the music industry and the skills required to succeed in the music business.

When selecting a singing course or hiring a private singing tutor, you will need to assess the cost and also decide what you personally want to achieve from your life as an entertainer. If you are dedicated to singing as a career the financial investment could be worthwhile and you will have a competitive advantage over other aspiring pop stars.
